Sheffield United prevail in Yorkshire derby friendly
Sheffield United made the short journey across Yorkshire and came away with a convincing victory over their local rivals. The away side controlled large periods of the friendly, keeping Rotherham United at arm's length throughout the 90 minutes. Rotherham offered resistance but struggled to trouble a well-organised Sheffield United defence in what proved a productive run-out for both clubs ahead of the new season.
Sheffield United broke the deadlock just before the interval when T. Chong struck in the 43rd minute to give the visitors a crucial advantage heading into half-time. The goal set the tone for what would become a dominant second-half display from Chris Wilder's side. Ten minutes into the second half, C. O'Hare added the second goal in the 53rd minute, effectively putting the contest beyond Rotherham's reach and sealing the away win.
The hosts never managed to gain a foothold after falling behind to Chong's first-half goal. Rotherham created few clear-cut openings and their attacking play lacked the sharpness required to trouble Sheffield United's rearguard. The visitors' defensive solidity and composed possession throughout the match prevented their hosts from mounting any meaningful comeback.
For Sheffield United, the result offered encouragement ahead of the coming campaign, with both Chong and O'Hare making important contributions to a well-executed performance. Rotherham will have learned plenty from the defeat despite the frustration of failing to score. Both clubs will use this friendly to fine-tune their preparations, with Sheffield United heading into the next fixture with momentum on their side.
