Valencia secure comfortable away win in Luanda
Atlético Petróleos de Luanda took the game to Valencia early on, with an unmarked player finding the back of the net in the 11th minute to give the home side a shock lead. The goal came against the run of play and appeared to stun the visitors, who had started brightly but found themselves chasing the game in the opening stages.
Valencia responded with purpose and soon turned the match on its head. The Spanish side's superior quality began to tell as they worked the ball around with precision and purpose. Their midfield started to control proceedings, cutting off the supply lines to Atlético Petróleos' attack while building their own attacking moves with increasing frequency.
The away side's dominance eventually translated into goals as Valencia struck three times to turn the deficit into a commanding advantage. Their attacking players found space with increasing regularity, and the home defence struggled to contain the visitors' movement and creativity. By the final whistle, Valencia had thoroughly established their superiority on the pitch.
The result provided Valencia with a solid workout during the pre-season period, and they will take considerable encouragement from their second-half performance. Atlético Petróleos, meanwhile, will reflect on a difficult evening against experienced opposition and identify areas for improvement as their own preparations continue.
