Montpellier Edge Past Clermont in Pre-Season Friendly
Montpellier made the journey to Clermont determined to make an impression in this friendly encounter, and they got off to a perfect start. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 14th minute through N. Vidal-Cartoux, who slotted home to give Montpellier an early advantage. The goal set the tone for what would prove a disciplined away performance from the visitors, who controlled large periods of the match despite Clermont's attempts to find a way back into the contest.
Clermont pushed hard throughout the match looking for an equaliser, but Montpellier's defence remained resolute. The home side had their moments and created some opportunities to test the visiting goalkeeper, but clear-cut chances proved hard to come by. A Clermont player was cautioned in the 57th minute as the frustration mounted among the hosts, who struggled to break down their well-organised opponents.
As the match entered its closing stages, Montpellier seemed content to protect their lead and see out the victory. However, with the final whistle approaching, Montpellier extended their advantage further when an unnamed player made it 0-1 in the 90th minute. The late goal secured the win for the visitors and capped off an impressive away performance in difficult circumstances.
The result gives Montpellier valuable momentum heading into the new season, with their defence and clinical finishing on display. Clermont will use the experience as a building block during their pre-season preparations, knowing they need to sharpen their attacking play ahead of the campaign ahead.
