Benfica B U21 demolish Mérida in dominant friendly display
Benfica B U21 made a statement of intent in their pre-season friendly, running out convincing winners against Spanish outfit Mérida AD. The hosts controlled proceedings from start to finish against an opponent that offered little resistance throughout the 90 minutes. It was a warm evening in Lisbon, and the Portuguese side's attacking intent was clear from the opening whistle.
The home team struck early to seize the initiative. A breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute when the opener went past Mérida's goalkeeper, giving Benfica an ideal platform to build upon. The visitors barely had time to settle before the second goal arrived in the 19th minute, extending the hosts' advantage. Benfica pressed further and struck again in the 25th minute to make it three, at which point the contest had effectively been settled. A fourth goal followed quickly in the 31st minute, wrapping up a devastating opening period that saw Mérida completely overwhelmed.
Once the dust had settled on that early bombardment, the match lost much of its competitive edge. Benfica controlled the tempo without needing to exert themselves further, while Mérida struggled to create anything of substance going forward. The away side's defensive problems were evident, and they offered virtually nothing in an attacking sense. The second half became something of a formality as Benfica managed the game comfortably.
This emphatic victory will serve as an ideal confidence builder for Benfica's youth side heading into the new season. Their clinical finishing in the opening half demonstrated the quality within their ranks, while the defensive solidity throughout suggested a well-drilled unit. The scoreline reflects a gulf in class between the two sides, though friendly fixtures against less demanding opposition often produce such one-sided results. Benfica will take considerable satisfaction from the performance and can now focus on their competitive campaign ahead.
