Pohang Steelers edge dramatic away victory against FC Anyang
FC Anyang and Pohang Steelers served up an entertaining encounter on a warm July afternoon in front of a lively crowd. The visitors made the perfect start with Wanderson breaking the deadlock in just the second minute, putting Pohang in the driving seat early on. Anyang would have to come from behind if they were to get anything from the match, and the home crowd sensed a battle ahead.
The hosts drew level through M. Oliveira's strike just before halftime, bringing parity to proceedings as the teams went in level at 1-1. Pohang's K. Shin picked up a booking in the 32nd minute for a reckless challenge, while Anyang's G. Choe also saw yellow for dissent on 42 minutes. The match remained tightly contested heading into the break, with both sides having chances to claim an advantage.
Pohang began to assert themselves after the interval despite finding themselves down to ten men. Shin received his marching orders in the 60th minute for a second yellow card, leaving the visitors a man short. Yet the numerical disadvantage seemed to energise Pohang rather than hinder them, and they went on to score twice more to secure a remarkable victory. Anyang pressed forward in search of an equaliser but could not find the breakthrough they needed, leaving them frustrated on the final whistle.
The defeat was a bitter pill for Anyang, who had fought back into the contest only to see it slip away. For Pohang, the win away from home represents a significant statement of intent in their title challenge this season. The visitors showed character and resilience to overcome their numerical disadvantage and claim all three points in a match that had everything.
