Sabah FK stun KuPS with commanding away victory
Kuopion Palloseura hosted Sabah FK in what proved a frustrating afternoon for the Finnish side, who found themselves outplayed by their visiting opponents from the start. The home crowd had hoped for a strong showing in this crucial Champions League qualifier, but KuPS struggled to impose themselves on the game and rarely threatened the away side's backline.
Sabah FK broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when V. Simić found the back of the net to give the visitors a crucial lead. The goal seemed to energise the away team, who controlled proceedings through the middle stages of the match. KuPS pushed for an equaliser but lacked the cutting edge needed to trouble Sabah FK's goalkeeper, and their hopes were extinguished when J. Mickels sealed the away victory in the 70th minute. The final score of Kuopion Palloseura 0-2 Sabah FK left little doubt about which team had performed better on the night.
The second half saw both teams receive yellow cards, with U. Rahmonaliev cautioned for Sabah FK in the 60th minute before P. Pennanen saw yellow for KuPS two minutes later. Despite their numerical parity and the chances that came their way, the home side could not find a way through a well-organised Sabah FK defence that stood firm throughout.
This away victory represents a significant achievement for Sabah FK, who now advance in the competition with considerable momentum. For KuPS, the defeat is a bitter pill to swallow on home soil, leaving them with work to do if they are to progress in this competition. The gulf in class between the two sides was evident across the 90 minutes, and Sabah FK fully merited their impressive 0-2 triumph.
