Kane Double Sends England Past DR Congo Into Last 16

Share

England's Round of 32 clash with DR Congo got off to a shocking start at Wembley as the visitors struck first. Barely seven minutes had elapsed when Blaise Cipenga caught the home defence napping and fired DR Congo into a surprise lead. The goal sent a jolt through the stadium and forced England to reassess their approach. Jude Bellingham was cautioned for a rash challenge just 12 minutes later as tensions rose early in the contest.

The hosts gradually worked their way back into the match as the first half progressed, but DR Congo remained competitive and threatened to extend their advantage. N'Sadiki picked up a yellow card for DR Congo as the defensive battle intensified. England needed a spark and found it through their captain in the second half. Harry Kane equalised in the 75th minute, drawing the sides level at 1-1 and breathing life back into the home crowd.

With the knockout tie finely balanced, Kane struck again just 11 minutes later to put England ahead for the first time. His second goal of the evening, struck in the 86th minute, proved decisive as England went 2-1 up. DR Congo pressed hard during the six minutes of stoppage time that followed but could not find another goal to force extra time.

The victory sent England through to the knockout rounds proper, though their performance against a spirited DR Congo side served as a reminder that no team could be taken lightly in this competition. Kane's double ensured he remains England's go-to man in crucial moments, and the striker's finishing proved the difference on the night. England would now face a last-16 opponent with growing confidence, though they knew tougher challenges lay ahead.
