Nacional Dominates Tigres in Copa Colombia Opening

Atlético Nacional made a statement of intent in their Copa Colombia campaign, dismantling Tigres FC with a polished display at their fortress. The home crowd provided a roaring backdrop as the Medellín side dictated play from the opening whistle, pressing high and controlling the tempo with assured passing. Tigres arrived without answers to Nacional's intensity, and it was clear early on that the visitors would spend most of the afternoon defending.

The deadlock fell in the 39th minute when Juan Zapata broke the ice, firing Nacional ahead with a clinical finish that sent the home support into raptures. Tigres' frustrations boiled over minutes later when Yerson Salas picked up a yellow card for his protests, and the situation worsened dramatically just before the interval. Yersson Perlaza extended Nacional's lead in the 45th minute with a strike that ended any lingering hopes Tigres harboured of a comeback. To compound their misery, Tigres saw Wilson Mena also cautioned before half-time, leaving them with a mountain to climb in the second period.

Nacional controlled the second half with the composure of a team already through to the next round. An unnamed Nacional player received a booking in the 63rd minute, but there was never any sense the hosts would relinquish their grip on the tie. Tigres offered little in attack and seemed resigned to a heavy defeat, unable to generate the quality needed to trouble Nacional's defence.

The 2-0 victory sends Nacional through Round 1 with maximum points and plenty of momentum heading forward. Tigres will need to regroup quickly and dust themselves off for their remaining fixtures, knowing this was a chastening experience at one of Colombia's strongest sides.
