NEC Nijmegen demolish Willem II in dominant away performance
Willem II Tilburg suffered a humbling afternoon against NEC Nijmegen, who arrived at the Koning Willem II Stadion and delivered a clinical masterclass in away football. The visitors controlled large periods of the match and punished their hosts with ruthless finishing, though the home side offered little resistance to a far superior attacking force.
Amin Tahaui broke the deadlock in the 45th minute to give NEC a half-time advantage. The away team then shifted into another gear after the interval, with Thom Chery extending the lead in the 54th minute. Bas Linssen made it three just ten minutes later, and Kik Sierhuis added a fourth in the 67th minute to effectively settle the contest. Willem II's sole response came through Tyronne Verheydt's 77th-minute strike, which offered no more than consolation in a one-sided affair that saw N. Tjoe-A-On cautioned for Willem II in the 16th minute.
NEC's dominance was evident in how systematically they dismantled their opponents. By the time Verheydt pulled one back in the closing stages, the damage had already been done. Willem II never found their rhythm and looked vulnerable defensively throughout, unable to mount any sustained pressure on their visitors.
The result marks a statement start to the season for NEC, who travel home with three points and a substantial goal difference boost. Willem II, by contrast, face serious questions about their defensive organisation and attacking impotence after a display that offered their supporters little encouragement ahead of upcoming fixtures.
