Shanghai Shenhua edges thrilling contest against Zhejiang
Shanghai Shenhua hosted Zhejiang on a summer evening that promised entertainment, and the fixture delivered in full measure. The home crowd sensed opportunity from the start, and their faith was rewarded when W. Xi broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, putting Shanghai ahead with a composed finish. The hosts controlled large portions of the first half, though Zhejiang showed resilience and defensive discipline in the face of sustained pressure. The visiting side's task grew harder when T. Lei was cautioned early in the second period, adding to the yellow card R. Aloisi had already received at the very start of the match.
Xi doubled Shanghai's advantage in the 51st minute, and the home team appeared to be pulling clear. Zhejiang had other ideas, however. The visitors mounted a comeback that brought their supporters to life, with W. Yudong pulling one back in the 66th minute to set up a grandstand finish. M. Tolić made it 2-2 in the 79th minute, levelling the match and sending a jolt through the crowd. Z. Aihui's yellow card in the 72nd minute showed Zhejiang's frustration, yet they continued fighting for a result.
The intensity ratcheted up as Shanghai sought to reclaim the lead. R. Ratão settled the contest from the penalty spot in the 86th minute, restoring Shanghai's advantage at a crucial moment. Five minutes of stoppage time followed, but the home team held firm to secure the three points despite Zhejiang's desperate attempts to equalise again.
The victory keeps Shanghai Shenhua's challenge alive in the title race, while Zhejiang depart with credit for a spirited display that showed fighting spirit. Shanghai's ability to respond when pressed suggests they have the character needed for a strong season ahead. Zhejiang will rue the missed chances to take something from the Pudong Stadium, but they showed they can compete with the league's bigger names.
