Wolves and Rovers Share Spoils in Tight NPL Queensland Contest
Wynnum Wolves and Rochedale Rovers served up an entertaining clash that neither side could quite win on the day. The home crowd at Wynnum expected their side to push for three points, but the visitors proved resilient throughout. Both teams created chances and showed commitment in what was a competitive midfield battle, though clear-cut opportunities were at a premium for long spells.
Rochedale struck first when they found the net in the 68th minute to edge ahead. The goal gave the away side genuine hope of taking all three points back to Brisbane. However, Wynnum refused to accept defeat and rallied impressively in the closing stages. The hosts levelled matters with a goal in the 90th minute, rescuing a point right at the death and leaving Rochedale with frustration after having controlled much of the second half.
Rochedale's discipline issues threatened to derail their challenge as the match wore on. A player was cautioned in the 59th minute, before two more yellow cards followed in the 78th and 90th minutes respectively. Despite the repeated warnings, the visitors held firm and could point to their early goal as a sign their approach had merit.
The draw leaves both sides with work to do as the NPL Queensland campaign continues. Wynnum will feel their late leveller was deserved reward for sustained pressure, while Rochedale may wonder what might have been had they held on for the full 90 minutes. Neither team could afford much in terms of ground lost in the title race, making this a result that suited both.
