Switzerland advances past Algeria in Round of 32 clash
The Stade de Genève erupted as Switzerland set about their business against Algeria in what was always going to be a pivotal knockout tie. The Swiss came flying out of the blocks with clear intent, immediately asserting their authority on proceedings. Algeria, meanwhile, looked to absorb the early pressure and hit on the counter, but they found themselves under relentless scrutiny from the moment the whistle blew.
Breel Embolo broke the deadlock with a clinical finish in the 10th minute, sending the home crowd into raptures. The goal gave Switzerland the platform they needed, though Algeria briefly threatened to settle into the contest as the half wore on. The visitors picked up a yellow card when Faouzi Chaïbi was cautioned in the 36th minute for a wayward challenge, but they kept themselves in touching distance heading into the interval.
The second half proved decisive within moments. Dan Ndoye doubled Switzerland's advantage just 46 seconds after the restart, effectively putting the tie beyond doubt. Another yellow card followed when Hamed Boudaoui was booked in the 72nd minute, but by then the outcome was already settled. Switzerland controlled the rhythm throughout, never allowing Algeria a genuine foothold as the North Africans struggled to find any meaningful rhythm in attack.
The 2-0 scoreline flattered Algeria's efforts on the night. Switzerland's passage into the last 16 was thoroughly earned, and they will head into the next round with real momentum and confidence. For Algeria, this represented a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign, but they depart with their heads held high after navigating a tough group stage to reach this knockout round.
