Žilina edges past Hajduk in Europa League qualifier

Share

Žilina and Hajduk Split served up an entertaining contest under the lights in Slovakia, with both sides intent on making an impression in Europe's secondary competition. The home crowd created a vibrant atmosphere as the two clubs battled for control in a competitive opening phase. Neither team settled early, with chances at a premium as defences held firm and midfields scrapped for possession.

The breakthrough came just before the interval when Hajduk's A. V. Hoorenbeeck finished clinically in the 45th minute, giving the visitors a precious lead at half-time. Žilina emerged with renewed vigour after the restart, however, and the pressure told when M. Roginić equalised in the 53rd minute. The goal shifted momentum decisively in the home side's favour, and they seized the advantage to add a second that proved decisive before the final whistle.

Hajduk tried to respond and maintain their threat on the break, though yellow cards for Š. Hrgović and Hoorenbeeck early on had already signalled the intensity levels. Žilina controlled proceedings in the latter stages, managing the game intelligently while Hajduk found their attacking options increasingly limited. The hosts' composure paid off, and they saw out the victory without serious alarm despite a late push from their guests.

The 2-1 win sends Žilina into the next qualifying round with a winning mentality and home advantage secured. Hajduk, despite a bright first half and Hoorenbeeck's early goal, face an uphill task in any replay or progression scenario. For Žilina, the performance demonstrated the character and resilience needed for a long European campaign, and they will travel to Split knowing they have given themselves real hope of progressing further.
