Alvarado Snatches Late Winner for Guadalajara
CD Guadalajara's Estadio Jalisco played host to a tightly contested Liga MX Apertura clash on a warm July evening that promised plenty but delivered frustration for large stretches. Both sides came to compete, yet chances were at a premium as neither team managed to break through a well-organised defence for most of the ninety minutes. The encounter had all the hallmarks of a low-scoring affair, with defences firmly on top as the second half wore on.
FC Juárez had to endure a couple of early disciplinary setbacks, with Hector Ortega shown a yellow card in the opening exchanges and Torres picking up a caution late on that left the visitors working with growing frustration. Guadalajara weathered the pressure and remained compact throughout, waiting for their opportunity to strike. When that moment came, it arrived at the very last gasp of the match as the clock ticked into the additional seven minutes added for stoppages.
Raúl Alvarado delivered the knockout punch right at the death in the 90th minute, breaking Juárez's stubborn resistance to hand the home side all three points when it seemed the contest might end goalless. Ruben Marín picked up a yellow card in the same frantic period, but by then the damage was done for the visitors. It proved to be a cruel blow for Juárez, who had defended admirably but fell victim to a lapse in concentration at the worst possible moment.
The victory keeps Guadalajara's campaign on track with a hard-fought three points, while Juárez will rue their inability to find the net against an organised home side. Alvarado's late heroics mean the Tapatíos have started their tournament push with an important win, though they will know there is much to improve in their attacking play as the campaign progresses.
