Switchbacks Edge Battery in Dramatic Home Victory
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Charleston Battery on Saturday evening in front of their home crowd. The match was competitive from the start, with both sides eager to impose themselves in what proved to be an entertaining contest. An early yellow card for Charleston's G. Smith in the 13th minute set a slightly fractious tone, but neither team allowed the physical nature of play to derail their attacking intent.
The breakthrough came in the 56th minute when A. Perez fired Colorado Springs into the lead. The goal appeared to have settled the match in favour of the hosts, who controlled proceedings for much of the second half. However, Charleston refused to lie down and pulled level in the 81st minute through A. Cabrera, setting up a tense finale. I. Foster received a yellow card for Colorado Springs just three minutes later as tensions mounted late in the game.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Colorado Springs produced a crucial moment in stoppage time. J. Fjellberg struck in the 90th minute to restore the hosts' lead and secure the points. Charleston's K. Pakhomov and M. Foster both picked up yellow cards in the closing stages as the away side pushed for another equaliser, but the Switchbacks held firm to claim victory.
The result moves Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC up the standings with an important three points at home. Charleston Battery will feel they should have taken something from the game after their second-half leveller, but ultimately the late goal proved decisive. Both teams now turn their attention to their next fixtures as the USL Championship campaign continues.
