Cannes and Roma Share Six-Goal Thriller in Summer Friendly
AS Cannes and AS Roma served up a classic summer friendly on Saturday, with both teams clearly still sharpening their attacking edge ahead of the new season. The home side gave their supporters plenty to cheer about in front of a lively crowd at the Stade de la Périphérique, though they were unable to secure victory against determined opposition. Roma arrived with ambitions of a win on the road, and for large periods they looked capable of getting one.
Roma struck first when Paulo Dybala opened the scoring in the 34th minute, giving the visitors an early foothold in the contest. The Argentine playmaker doubled his tally just nine minutes later when Deyovaisio Malen added Roma's second to make it 0-2 at the break. Cannes needed a response after the interval, and Dybala appeared to have settled matters when he completed his hat-trick early in the second half with his third goal of the afternoon to stretch Roma's lead to three. But the home side refused to lie down. J. López pulled one back for Cannes in the 69th minute to make it 2-3, and the momentum shifted decisively in the hosts' favour as they pressed forward.
The match took a controversial turn when Roma's Wesley was sent off with a red card in the 45th minute, having already been booked earlier in the game. Playing with a numerical advantage for the final stages, Cannes capitalised on their superiority. López struck again in the 88th minute to level the score at AS Cannes 3-3 AS Roma, and the visitors had to withstand late pressure to preserve the draw. Both teams seemed content to settle for a point in this entertaining warm-up fixture.
The result leaves both sides with much to consider as they prepare for the competitive campaign ahead. For Cannes, the comeback showed character and resilience, though they will know that a numerical advantage should have yielded more than a draw. Roma demonstrated their attacking prowess but will be disappointed to have squandered their position of strength, particularly after taking the lead through Dybala's early goals. Both managers will use this outing to assess their squad options before the season begins in earnest.
