Liverpool edge past Sunderland in entertaining friendly clash
Liverpool and Sunderland served up an entertaining encounter on a warm July evening at Anfield. The home side came into the match with plenty of attacking ambition, and the crowd was treated to an open, free-flowing contest that saw both teams create chances and take them with reasonable regularity. There was a real edge to the friendly, with neither side content to merely go through the motions ahead of the new season.
K. Morrison broke the deadlock for Liverpool in the 13th minute, giving the hosts an early lead. Sunderland hit back with a well-taken goal from E. Le Fée in the 28th minute to level the score. The visitors' resilience was tested further when D. Ballard picked up a yellow card in the 20th minute, and they looked capable of troubling Liverpool throughout the first half despite falling behind initially.
The second half proved decisive in Liverpool's favour. T. Tuterov equalised for Sunderland early in the half with a composed finish to make it 2-2 in the 49th minute, setting up an intriguing final stage. Liverpool's quality began to tell, however, as D. Szoboszlai restored the home side's advantage in the 56th minute with a goal that shifted the momentum back towards the Reds. Liverpool pressed hard thereafter and added two further goals to secure a commanding 4-2 victory.
The result gave Liverpool confidence heading into their fixture list, though they will have taken encouragement from the depth of their squad and their ability to respond when tested. Sunderland showed plenty of attacking prowess but will reflect on defensive lapses that ultimately proved costly. For Liverpool, the comfortable nature of the win in the closing stages suggested their pre-season preparation is on track.
