Sporting CP sees off Monaco in pre-season friendly
Sporting CP and AS Monaco locked horns in Lisbon on a warm July evening as both sides prepared for the season ahead. The home crowd provided an encouraging atmosphere throughout, and Sporting looked sharp and organised from the opening whistle. Monaco settled into the contest gradually but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities as the first half wore on without incident.
The breakthrough came ten minutes into the second half when Ruben Nel found the back of the net to give Sporting the lead. The hosts grew in confidence following that opening goal and pressed forward with real intent. Nel's strike proved to be the turning point, with Sporting dominating possession and dictating the tempo of the match.
Sporting extended their advantage before the final whistle to seal a convincing 2-0 victory. The second goal came after Monaco had shown little sign of mounting a comeback, and the visitors' defence looked increasingly stretched as the match progressed. Ismaila Doumbia, who had picked up a yellow card earlier in the proceedings, worked hard to keep things tight at the back for Sporting.
The result represents a positive step in pre-season preparation for Sporting, who will take confidence from a controlled display against experienced European opposition. Monaco, by contrast, will have plenty to work on before their competitive campaign begins. For Sporting, this was a valuable run-out that suggested their squad is developing nicely ahead of the challenges that lie ahead.
