Cannes Stage Stunning Comeback to Stun Montpellier
Montpellier made the better start and took the lead through T. Chennahi in the 10th minute, but AS Cannes responded quickly with two goals in rapid succession. R. Gerbeaud equalised just two minutes later before striking again in the 23rd minute to flip the script and give the visitors an unexpected advantage. The early intensity promised an entertaining contest, and so it proved as both sides looked to make their mark in this pre-season encounter.
Montpellier hauled themselves level before half-time when M. Camara scored in the 40th minute, leaving the teams locked at 2-2 at the interval. The match remained finely balanced after the restart, but Cannes edged ahead again in the 55th minute through A. Kerouedan's goal. That prompted Montpellier to press forward in search of another equaliser, but it was Cannes who extended their advantage when M. Die scored in the 75th minute to make it 4-2.
The home side refused to surrender, however, and mounted a late rally to give themselves hope. J. Ndiaye pulled one back in the 90th minute to set up a tense finale, but there was simply not enough time for Montpellier to find another goal. Cannes held firm to secure a deserved 4-3 victory despite the relentless pressure from their hosts in those final moments.
The result underlines Cannes' quality in the attacking third and their ability to stay composed when trailing. For Montpellier, the defeat highlighted some defensive vulnerabilities that will need addressing before the season begins in earnest. Both sides will take positives from an absorbing friendly that showcased the calibre of Ligue 1 football.
