Rijeka Cruises Past Dekani in Pre-Season Friendly
HNK Rijeka dominated proceedings from the outset against their lower-league visitors, controlling possession and forcing Dekani into a defensive approach. The home side pressed high and created chances with relative ease, with the Rijeka crowd settling in for what looked like a straightforward afternoon. The visitors offered little in attacking threat, content to sit deep and hope for opportunities on the counter.
Rijeka broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when T. Fruk finished clinically to put the hosts ahead. The goal came as little surprise given the pattern of play, though it took the hosts until past the quarter-hour mark to convert their dominance into a lead. Dekani rallied briefly after falling behind but struggled to trouble Rijeka's defence with any real conviction throughout the opening period.
The second half saw Rijeka continue their steady control of the match. A. Gojak extended the lead in the 53rd minute, and at that point the contest was effectively decided. Both teams picked up yellow cards as the tempo dropped, with Rijeka collecting cautions in the 58th and 76th minutes while Dekani received one in the 81st minute. The later stages saw Rijeka see out the match comfortably without any real pressure from their opponents.
Rijeka's 2-0 victory provided a solid workout ahead of the competitive season, with the side demonstrating efficiency in front of goal and defensive solidity throughout. For Dekani, this was a stiff test against superior opposition in a friendly designed to test themselves against higher quality. Rijeka will take confidence from the performance, though they will know sterner tests await when the season truly gets underway.
