Lyon edges past Wolfsburg in pre-season friendly
VfL Wolfsburg and Olympique Lyonnais served up a competitive pre-season clash at the Volkswagen Arena on Wednesday evening. The Bundesliga side looked to shake off their summer preparations while Lyon travelled north with clear intent. The atmosphere was bright enough for a July friendly, though neither team found much rhythm in the opening exchanges as defences held firm and chances remained scarce.
The match turned decisively in Lyon's favour when Elias Rexhbeçaj was sent off for Wolfsburg in the 64th minute. This numerical disadvantage proved telling as the visitors began to control proceedings with greater conviction. They finally made their superiority count six minutes before the final whistle when Ainsley Maitland-Niles fired home to seal a 0-2 victory, with the away side holding on comfortably to the end.
Wolfsburg struggled to impose themselves after going down to ten men, and their attacking play suffered accordingly. Lyon, by contrast, grew into the contest and showed the clinical edge needed to convert their chances. The French side's defence remained organised throughout, limiting the hosts to few genuine opportunities despite their best efforts in the closing stages.
The victory offers Lyon a solid foundation as they continue their pre-season preparations ahead of the new campaign. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, will need to regroup and address the issues exposed during a difficult second half. For a friendly encounter, the match delivered the kind of competitive edge both sides sought from their summer schedule.
