Petrovic Double Not Enough as Shakhtar Hold Belupo
NK Slaven Belupo hosted Shakhtar Donetsk in a pre-season friendly that promised attacking football and largely delivered on that front. The Croatian side came into the match looking to build momentum ahead of their domestic campaign, while Shakhtar travelled west seeking valuable minutes under competition conditions. The home crowd was treated to an open contest that swung back and forth across the ninety minutes.
Shakhtar took the lead through Alisson in the 56th minute, putting the away side in control of proceedings. Belupo responded with real urgency and found their way back into the game when Marko Petrovic levelled matters in the 63rd minute. Sensing the momentum had shifted, Petrovic struck again just six minutes later to put his side ahead at 2-1. Shakhtar refused to fold despite falling behind, and their quality showed through when they drew level to secure a 2-2 final scoreline that reflected the competitive nature of the encounter.
The match flowed well with both teams creating opportunities throughout. Belupo looked dangerous going forward in the second half particularly, with Petrovic proving a handful for the Shakhtar defence. The visitors showed their technical quality and composure under pressure, demonstrating why they remain one of Ukraine's top sides. Tobias received a yellow card for Shakhtar in the 41st minute as tempers occasionally frayed.
The draw leaves both clubs with something to take from the fixture. Belupo will be pleased with their second-half performance and the clinical finishing of Petrovic, though they may feel they should have held on for victory. For Shakhtar, the point represents a solid comeback and valuable match practice as they continue their summer preparations. Both sides will use this encounter as a platform heading into their respective competitive schedules.
