Žilina edges past Katowice in Conference League qualifier
The Slovakian side made hard work of what should have been a comfortable home tie at the Štadión pod Dubňom. Žilina started brightly enough in front of their own supporters, but they were caught cold in the opening stages when Katowice's Lukas Klemenz seized on a loose moment to fire the visitors ahead after just six minutes. The goal set the tone for a fractious opening half, with both sides receiving yellow cards as the intensity ratcheted up and the match became increasingly niggly.
Žilina gradually found their rhythm and the breakthrough came from the penalty spot when Matej Káčer converted with clinical precision in the 29th minute to level the match. The home crowd lifted with the goal, sensing that momentum had shifted in their favour. The first half ended level and tense, with Žilina having weathered the early storm and earned themselves a foothold back into the contest.
The Slovak outfit emerged with clear intent after the interval and needed just two minutes to turn the tie on its head. Tomáš Hranica fired past the Katowice keeper in the 47th minute to put Žilina 2-1 ahead, a goal that proved decisive on the night. From that point forward, the home side managed the game competently despite some spirited Katowice attempts to grab an equaliser, and they held their nerve to secure passage through to the next round.
The 2-1 victory keeps Žilina's European campaign alive and sets up what promises to be an intriguing tie in the next qualifying round. They will take confidence from a hard-fought win against determined opposition, though they will know that more clinical finishing and fewer defensive lapses will be required if they are to progress further in the competition.
