Riga stun Vardar with away victory in Conference League
FK Vardar Skopje started the brighter side on a warm evening in Skopje, but Riga FC's visit proved far more threatening than expected. The atmosphere was lively despite the early dismissal of Vardar's Carlo Fabbiani to a yellow card just moments into the contest. It was the kind of opening that set the tone for a competitive, occasionally scrappy affair that would keep both benches engaged throughout.
The Latvian visitors broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when O. Galo finished clinically to put Riga ahead. Vardar looked rattled and failed to respond with any real intensity, allowing Riga to extend their advantage just four minutes later. I. S. Augusto made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, and suddenly the home side found themselves chasing the game. D. Castañeda pulled one back for Vardar before halftime to inject some hope into the hosts, but Riga remained in control as both teams retreated.
The second half belonged more evenly to both sides, with neither team able to establish complete dominance. Vardar pressed forward looking for an equaliser and found it through G. Rodrigues in the 66th minute, bringing the crowd back into the contest at 2-2. The momentum swung toward the home team, but Riga's experience showed when I. S. Augusto struck again in the 81st minute to restore the away side's lead. Despite Vardar's late pressure, Riga held firm to secure their passage.
This victory sends Riga through to the next qualifying round with a precious away win under their belts. For Vardar, the loss represents a bitter end to their European campaign after a spirited second-half performance proved too little, too late. Riga's efficient finishing and composure under pressure proved decisive in what was ultimately a contest decided by quality rather than intensity alone.
