Midtjylland Edge Thriller at Sønderjyske in Season Opener
Sønderjyske Fodbold and FC Midtjylland served up an early-season classic under blue skies in Aabenraa, with both sides keen to make a statement in the opening weeks of the campaign. The home crowd sensed an opportunity to get off to a winning start, but they would leave disappointed after a gripping contest that swung back and forth throughout the 90 minutes.
The visiting side struck first when M. B. Sørensen found the net in the 26th minute, putting Midtjylland ahead just minutes before M. Jensen equalised for Sønderjyske in the 27th. The momentum continued to shift as V. Byskov restored Midtjylland's lead in the 35th minute with a well-taken finish. Sønderjyske showed character to level before the break when M. Haidara scored in the 45th minute, sending the teams in at half-time locked at 1-1. The second period proved decisive when J. Emefile broke the deadlock in the 66th minute to give Midtjylland a 2-3 advantage they would not relinquish.
Sønderjyske pressed hard in pursuit of an equaliser but could not find a way past Midtjylland's increasingly solid defence. The visitors defended resolutely in the closing stages, with four minutes of added time failing to produce another breakthrough for the home side. Several yellow cards, including cautions for R. Kristensen and F. Etim, punctuated a competitive affair that never descended into nastiness.
This away victory sends Midtjylland into the international break with confidence after claiming maximum points on the road. Sønderjyske will rue their inability to hold onto the lead, though they showed enough attacking quality to suggest they remain competitive in the division. Both sides have much to build on as the season gathers pace, but it was Midtjylland who made the more convincing statement on this occasion.
