Twente Beats Zwolle in Entertaining Home Opener
FC Twente made a winning start to their campaign in front of their home crowd, overpowering visiting PEC Zwolle despite an early scare. Sørensen had given the away side a shock lead on 21 minutes, catching the home defence off guard with a clinical finish. The advantage proved short-lived, however. Weidmann equalized before the break with a composed strike on 38 minutes, and from that point forward, Twente's superiority became apparent.
The second half belonged almost entirely to the hosts. Mbayo's own goal on 59 minutes handed Twente the lead in farcical circumstances, suggesting the visiting defence had lost its bearings. Rots then added a third on 69 minutes to effectively settle the contest and send Twente's supporters home satisfied. By that stage, PEC Zwolle had run out of ideas, and Twente controlled proceedings without ever needing to shift through the gears.
Twente's attacking play carried genuine quality throughout the closing stages, with Zwolle offering little resistance once they fell behind. The away side never recovered from the momentum shift early in the second period. What had looked a competitive opening half unravelled into a one-sided affair, leaving the visitors with plenty to ponder on the journey home.
Three points on the opening weekend provides the perfect foundation for Twente's season, though they will know better defensive organization is required when they face stronger opponents. Zwolle, meanwhile, must quickly assess what went wrong in that second-half collapse if they are to avoid a difficult start to their campaign.
