Zwolle stuns Heerenveen with clinical second-half display
SC Heerenveen failed to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes, allowing PEC Zwolle to settle into their shape and build confidence without threatening pressure from the hosts. The first half proved cagey and competitive, with neither side able to fashion clear-cut opportunities. Heerenveen's attempts to impose themselves at home yielded little in terms of genuine danger, and they would pay the price for that lack of intensity after the interval.
The second half brought immediate drama. Nick Viergever opened the scoring for PEC Zwolle in the 50th minute, a breakthrough that shifted momentum decisively toward the visitors. Eleven minutes later, Kees Kostons doubled the advantage with Zwolle's second goal, effectively deciding the contest. By that point, Heerenveen's defensive structure had collapsed, and Zwolle's clinical finishing made the difference between two sides separated by moments of quality rather than sustained dominance.
Heerenveen's problems mounted shortly after falling behind. The home side lacked the fluidity and cutting edge needed to respond, while Zwolle's defence grew increasingly assured as the lead widened. The turning point came not from a single error but from a collective loss of shape and purpose that plagued the hosts from the restart onward. Once Zwolle broke through, they managed the remainder with composure, content to press when opportunities arose and consolidate when Heerenveen pushed forward desperately in the closing stages.
Neither team played with the kind of relentless aggression that might have produced a entertaining spectacle. Heerenveen grew frustrated as the match slipped away, unable to find the rhythm that might have troubled Zwolle's back line. The visitors, meanwhile, executed a straightforward game plan well, keeping shape and converting the chances they created. It was functional rather than flowing football, but it served Zwolle's purpose entirely.
Two cautions went Zwolle's way, with Remy Thomas cautioned in the 40th minute and Kostons yellow-carded in the 56th, shortly after scoring. These bookings proved immaterial to the outcome. Zwolle's discipline remained sound throughout, and Heerenveen's late offensive efforts did little to trouble a side content to see out victory. The away win represented a solid start for Zwolle's season, while Heerenveen face urgent questions about their slow starts and defensive vulnerabilities going forward.
