Panathinaikos held as Hradec Králové stages late comeback
Panathinaikos FC dominated large stretches of this Conference League playoff and looked set for a straightforward passage when Aleksandar Tetteh struck twice in the second half. The home side controlled possession and created the clearer chances, but a devastating late collapse allowed FC Hradec Králové to snatch an unlikely draw and keep their European hopes alive.
Tetteh broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, giving Panathinaikos the lead they had threatened throughout the opening period. Six minutes later, the same player doubled the advantage with a clinical finish that appeared to have settled the contest. At 2-0 up with less than 30 minutes remaining, the home team looked in complete control and very much on course for a solitary-leg knockout victory.
Everything changed in the space of 180 seconds. E.F. Neto pulled one back in the 89th minute with a goal that suddenly transformed the momentum completely. Barely a minute later, A. Umar levelled matters with an even more dramatic finish in the 90th minute, leaving Panathinaikos stunned and forcing the tie into extra time rather than a decisive home victory.
The away side's comeback altered the entire character of the match. Panathinaikos had been the superior team for much of the game and created the better opportunities, but Hradec Králové showed genuine resilience and composure in the closing stages. Neither team managed to find a winner in extra time, leaving the playoff finely balanced ahead of the return fixture.
Both sides ended with 11 players and neither team's discipline appeared problematic, though the closing moments exposed defensive vulnerabilities in Panathinaikos' ranks when it mattered most. The home team will be frustrated to have surrendered their two-goal advantage so late, while Hradec Králové will travel back to Czech territory with genuine belief. The result leaves this playoff completely open, and the away leg will now carry enormous significance for both clubs' hopes of progressing further in the competition.
