Sporting Kansas City made a flying start and went two goals up inside the opening ten minutes. André Luiz struck in the fifth minute with L. B. Johnsen providing the assist, then added a second four minutes later assisted by C. Harris. W. Meyer extended the home side's lead to 3-0 in the 16th minute, assisted by E. Karić.

Philadelphia Union pulled themselves back into the match in the second half. B. Damiani scored in the 64th minute with F. Westfield setting him up, and two minutes later C. Sullivan equalised, assisted by D. Jean Jacques. M. Iloski put the visitors ahead in the 68th minute, assisted by Q. Sullivan.

The match remained tight over the closing stages. An own goal from Z. Bassong in the 73rd minute seemed to settle matters in Philadelphia's favour, though Sporting Kansas City could not find a way back. Philadelphia Union held on to secure a 3-4 victory against Sporting Kansas City over the full 90 minutes plus six minutes of added time.
