Universitatea Craiova made a solid start to their Champions League qualifying campaign with a narrow but deserved 1-0 win over Belarusian side ML Vitebsk on Tuesday evening. The hosts controlled long spells of the match and created the better opportunities throughout, though they were made to work hard for their advantage against a stubborn visiting defence. The stadium atmosphere provided a genuine lift for the home side, who were eager to make an impression in the competition's early rounds.

The decisive moment came without a goal scorer listed in official records, but Craiova's solitary strike proved enough to separate the two sides over the course of the 90 minutes. The Romanians had their chances but needed clinical finishing to break through Vitebsk's defensive shape. Discipline became an issue for the home team as they picked up two yellow cards, with A.
