Portland demolish Seattle in one-sided Pacific Northwest clash

Seattle Sounders FC came into the match on 17 July looking to maintain their MLS form, but Portland Timbers had other ideas entirely. The visitors came to Lumen Field with clear intent and quickly set about stamping their authority on proceedings. The home crowd sensed trouble early as Portland's clinical passing and movement exposed gaps in the Sounders' defence from the opening exchanges.

Portland broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when K. Kelsy finished calmly to give the Timbers an early foothold. Rothrock picked up a yellow card in the 49th minute as the home side's frustration grew.

Seattle offered little resistance throughout, and their defending was frequently poor when it mattered most. The Sounders finally got on the scoresheet late on when H. Dotson netted in the 87th minute, a consolation that did little to salvage their evening. That goal came too little and far too late to change the trajectory of what had been a thoroughly one-sided contest. Portland added a fifth in the 90th minute through A. Aravena to underline their complete superiority.

This result represents a significant statement from Portland, who travelled to the Emerald City and dismantled their divisional rivals without breaking a sweat. Seattle face serious questions about tactical setup and player performance after such a chastening defeat. For Portland, the 5-1 away victory shows they have the quality and mentality to compete at the highest level of the league. Both teams will look forward to their next assignments with very different moods and momentum.
