Toluca Wins Away as Guadalajara Struggles in Opener
CD Guadalajara began their Liga MX Apertura campaign at the Estadio Jalisco but found themselves outmatched by a clinical CD Toluca side from the opening exchanges. The home crowd had travelled to support their team, but the visitors quickly set about dampening their hopes with a composed performance that rarely allowed the hosts to settle into any meaningful rhythm.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Toluca won a penalty and A. Vega stepped up to convert with composure, giving the away side a well-earned lead heading into the interval. The goal proved a turning point in the match, with Guadalajara struggling to respond as they entered the second half. Their situation worsened dramatically in the 50th minute when Á. Sepúlveda received a straight red card, leaving the hosts down to ten men and facing an uphill battle.
With the numerical disadvantage firmly established, Toluca took full control and extended their advantage in the 74th minute through J. Gallardo, who finished clinically to put the result beyond doubt. Guadalajara pressed forward in search of a consolation goal but lacked the cutting edge to trouble Toluca's defence during the closing stages. Despite a spirited late effort, the home side could not muster the comeback their situation demanded.
The 0-2 scoreline handed Toluca a perfect start to their campaign while leaving Guadalajara with plenty to ponder after a disappointing opening fixture. For Toluca, the away victory represented exactly the kind of performance needed to build momentum in the competition. Guadalajara will need to regroup quickly and improve significantly if they are to climb the table in the weeks ahead.
