CD Toluca started brightly under the lights at the Estadio Nemesio Díez, and their positive start was rewarded when Javier Díaz fired them ahead in the 14th minute. The home side looked composed in possession and had reasons to believe they could build on that early breakthrough. Pumas, however, showed the character expected of a side representing Mexico's capital, and they grew into the contest as the first half progressed.

The visitors levelled matters in the 57th minute when Víctor Arteaga found the back of the net, dragging Pumas level after a forgettable opening hour. Just six minutes later, Santiago Córdova completed the turnaround with a decisive finish that put Pumas 2-1 ahead. Those quick-fire strikes changed the entire complexion of the match, with Toluca suddenly chasing the game rather than controlling it. Helinho received a yellow card for Toluca in the 17th minute, while Pumas' Raúl Lopez was cautioned late on during the 80th minute.

Toluca pressed hard in the closing stages, desperate to find another goal and salvage something from the encounter. Despite sustained pressure in the final minutes and five added minutes at the end of the second half, they could not break through the Pumas defence. The visitors held firm to secure three points on the road, a result that will give them considerable confidence heading into their next fixture.

The loss leaves Toluca with work to do early in the season, while Pumas have made a statement with an impressive away victory. Both teams will take lessons from this encounter as the Apertura campaign unfolds, but it is Pumas who travel home with the bragging rights on this occasion.
