Williams Breaks Late Deadlock as Rapids Edge San Diego
Colorado Rapids and San Diego FC served up a cagey contest at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, with neither side able to break through for the bulk of the afternoon. The home crowd remained patient if not entirely satisfied through a first half that produced few clear-cut chances and plenty of competitive edge. Yellow cards flew early, with San Diego's C. McVey cautioned in the 19th minute before Colorado's L. Williams picked up a booking two minutes later. The midfield battle remained intense throughout, setting the tone for what would become a war of attrition.
San Diego continued to frustrate the Rapids throughout the second half, their defensive shape holding firm despite Colorado's persistent attacks. Another couple of bookings arrived as the match grew tighter, I. Murphy seeing yellow for the visitors in the 71st minute before Colorado's R. Navarro and D. Yapi were both cautioned late on. The breakthrough looked like it might never come, yet neither team surrendered their pursuit of the opening goal even as the clock ticked toward full-time.
Drama arrived in stoppage time when L. Williams finally made the breakthrough for Colorado in the 90th minute, sending the home support into raptures just when it seemed the match would end goalless. San Diego's L. Morgan picked up a late yellow card in response, but the visitors had no time to mount a comeback. The decisive moment came right on the cusp of the final whistle, handing Colorado a crucial three points after a battle of wills that defined the fixture.
