Joveljić and García fire Sporting to victory over Minnesota
Sporting Kansas City made the most of home advantage against Minnesota United in an entertaining MLS encounter on a warm July evening. The hosts dictated much of the early play, though Minnesota posed a constant threat on the break. The intensity was evident from the first whistle, with both sides committing to their attacking approach while remaining compact in defence.
Djordje Joveljić broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, firing Sporting into the lead and setting the tone for the first half. Minnesota United struggled to find their rhythm, and Sporting's midfield controlled proceedings for large periods. The visitors did have chances to trouble the home side, but failed to capitalise before the interval. The first half finished with Sporting in command, though Minnesota's defensive discipline kept them within striking distance.
The second half saw Marinos García extend Sporting's advantage with a well-taken goal in the 54th minute, and the home side appeared to be cruising to victory. Minnesota, however, showed character and determination to pull one back through D. Padelford in the 75th minute, sparking hopes of a remarkable comeback. Despite a frantic closing period with both sides committing bodies forward, Minnesota could not find the equaliser, and Sporting held firm to secure the points with a 2-1 final score.
The victory keeps Sporting Kansas City's push up the standings on track, while Minnesota United will be disappointed not to have claimed at least a draw given their improved showing in the second half. Sporting's ability to score early and maintain their lead proved decisive, though they will know tighter performances may be needed against stronger opposition. Minnesota showed resilience in their comeback attempt, suggesting they remain capable of competing at this level going forward.
