Valenciennes sweep past Eastleigh in comfortable friendly victory
Eastleigh started brightly enough on a warm afternoon at their Spitfire Stadium, but Valenciennes had other ideas about how the afternoon would unfold. The French visitors came with clear attacking intent and found their rhythm quickly, settling into the match with composure and purpose that suggested they would pose serious problems for the home defence. The atmosphere among the home supporters remained upbeat early on, though it was clear which team held the upper hand as the first half progressed.
Valenciennes broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when M. Rouai found the back of the net to give the visitors a deserved lead. The goal seemed to deflate Eastleigh's resistance, and the home side struggled to mount any meaningful response as Valenciennes controlled possession and dictated play. Rouai's opener set the tone for what would become a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who looked increasingly desperate to find a way back into the contest.
The French side wrapped up the victory with two goals in the closing stages, putting the match beyond doubt. V. Marcel added the second in the 78th minute with a clinical finish, before an unmarked Valenciennes player completed the rout in the 89th minute to seal a comprehensive 0-3 win. Eastleigh's defence had been found wanting throughout, and they offered little resistance in the final moments as their opponent pulled further clear.
The result leaves Valenciennes in buoyant spirits heading into the second half of their pre-season schedule. For Eastleigh, there will be plenty to work on defensively and in their structure out of possession if they are to make progress this season. Friendlies such as this one can prove invaluable learning experiences, and the home side will hope to respond positively in their next fixture.
