Athletic Club cruises past Sestao River in friendly opener
Sestao River hosted Athletic Club on a warm summer evening as both sides looked to build match fitness ahead of the new campaign. The home supporters turned out in decent numbers at their compact ground, hoping to see their team make a strong impression. From the opening whistle, though, Athletic Club showed their intent and forced the issue from the start.
Gorka Guruzeta wasted no time announcing himself to the match, firing Athletic Club into a third-minute lead that caught Sestao River off guard. The early goal set the tone for a one-sided affair, with Athletic Club controlling proceedings for long stretches. Sestao River struggled to find their rhythm in the first half and rarely troubled the visiting defence. By the time the interval arrived, Athletic Club had established a commanding position without needing to expend excessive energy.
Athletic Club added a second goal to seal the victory and put the result beyond doubt. Sestao River rallied occasionally but lacked the cutting edge to trouble Athletic Club's backline significantly. The visitors managed the game effectively throughout the second half, content to maintain their lead while avoiding any unnecessary risks. Despite occasional pressure from the home side, Athletic Club saw out the match with ease.
The final whistle confirmed Athletic Club's 0-2 win, a solid result on the road heading into the season. For Sestao River, the defeat offered plenty of lessons as they prepare for their opening fixtures. Athletic Club will take confidence from their clinical performance and early breakthrough, though Xabi Alonso's men will know tougher examinations lie ahead once the league campaign begins.
