Göztepe Edge Past Al-Dhafra in Summer Friendly
Göztepe made the perfect start to their friendly fixture against Al-Dhafra on a warm July evening in front of their home support. The Turkish side looked sharp from the opening whistle, pressing high and forcing their Saudi visitors into an uncomfortable opening spell. The atmosphere suggested this was far more than a routine summer warm-up, with both teams eager to make an impression during the off-season preparations.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when A. Cherni finished clinically to give Göztepe the lead. The early goal appeared to settle the home side, who controlled proceedings for long periods. Göztepe extended their advantage just before the interval when A. Antunes added a second goal in the 35th minute, putting them firmly in command heading into the break.
Al-Dhafra emerged with renewed purpose after half-time and managed to pull one back to set up a tense final stretch. The visitors pressed for an equaliser but Göztepe's defence held firm to protect their advantage. Despite some nervous moments late on, the home side managed the closing stages with enough composure to see out the win.
The 2-1 victory gives Göztepe a confidence boost ahead of their competitive campaign, while Al-Dhafra will use the experience from a hard-fought away fixture to fine-tune their preparations. Both teams showed enough to suggest they will be competitive when the season gets underway, though Göztepe's ability to finish their chances proved the difference on the night.
