Schalke ease past Aue in commanding friendly display
Erzgebirge Aue welcomed Schalke to the Sparkassen-Erzgebirgsstadion on a warm July afternoon for what promised to be a useful pre-season workout for both sides. The hosts looked to make a positive start in front of their supporters, but it was the visitors who struck first and set the tone for an entertaining contest.
Mamadou Sylla gave Schalke the perfect start with a goal in the 28th minute, putting the away side in control. The forward doubled his tally before half-time to extend Schalke's lead to 2-0 heading into the interval. Aue emerged with renewed purpose after the break, but Schalke proved too clinical on the day. Cheikhou Gomis added a third goal in the 51st minute to seemingly put the game beyond reach, and Boubacar Lasme made it 4-0 just three minutes later. Aue pulled one back through an own goal in the 62nd minute to make it 4-1, setting up a more competitive finish, though Schalke's dominance meant they never looked truly threatened.
Schalke's attacking prowess was on full display throughout the afternoon, with their movement and finishing proving far sharper than their hosts could manage. Aue fought hard in spells but lacked the consistency to trouble a Schalke side that looked well-drilled and organised. The visitors controlled possession for large periods and their ability to score goals on the break showed they are moving in a positive direction under their new setup.
The result gives Schalke confidence ahead of their competitive campaign, with their attacking options showing plenty of promise during this pre-season test. Aue, meanwhile, will have taken lessons from a heavy defeat and will look to tighten their setup before their season gets underway. Both sides will continue their preparations with this match serving as useful feedback on where they stand going forward.
