Homburg edges past Pirmasens in summer friendly

FC 08 Homburg hosted FK Pirmasens on 17 July in what promised to be a straightforward summer warm-up for both regional sides. The Saarland clubs met in front of a modest crowd at the Homburg stadium, with neither team able to produce anything approaching a sparkling display during a first half that remained scoreless and somewhat sluggish.

The breakthrough came late in the second period when Homburg finally made their dominance count. An unnamed Homburg forward struck in the 81st minute to give the hosts the lead, and crucially, it proved to be the only goal of the match. Pirmasens pushed hard in search of an equaliser during the closing stages but could not find a way past the Homburg defence, leaving them empty-handed.

For large stretches Homburg controlled proceedings without ever truly threatening to run riot, while Pirmasens struggled to impose themselves on the game and rarely troubled the home goalkeeper. The quality remained typical of pre-season fixtures, with both sides clearly still working on their match sharpness ahead of the new campaign.

The win gave Homburg a positive result to build on in their preparations, though there remains much work to be done before competitive action resumes. Pirmasens will be left to rue their lack of cutting edge in the final third, though friendlies often serve as useful pointers for the weeks ahead.
