Tolima Holds Off Junior Fightback at Home
Deportes Tolima made the most of their home advantage on Saturday, dominating the opening stages against a visiting Junior Barranquilla side that struggled to find their rhythm. The atmosphere at the Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro was buoyant, with the home support providing a constant backdrop of noise and energy. Junior's task was made harder when J. Sarmiento picked up a yellow card in the 25th minute, forcing them into a cautious approach for much of the first half.
Tolima broke through just before the interval when J. Hurtado slotted home in the 37th minute, giving the hosts the perfect platform to build on heading into the break. The momentum continued immediately after the restart as K. Florez extended their lead with a goal in the 45th minute, appearing to have wrapped up the match with a commanding 2-0 advantage. Junior, however, showed real character and refused to surrender, pulling a goal back through G. Paiva in the 79th minute that set up a tense finale.
The closing stages saw both teams commit players forward as Junior hunted an equaliser, though Tolima's defence held firm under pressure. Paiva's effort at least gave the visitors something to show for their second-half performance, and the caution book was busy as tempers frayed, with Paiva and J. Canchimbo both booked in the final moments. Three minutes of stoppage time added a touch more nervousness, but Tolima saw out the match professionally.
The victory keeps Tolima's campaign on track and sends Junior home empty-handed after a disappointing afternoon. While Junior showed resilience in fighting back, they will rue their slow start and inability to trouble the Tolima defence for large parts of the contest. For the hosts, this was a convincing display that showcased their ability to control matches at home, and they will look to build momentum in their next fixture.
