Viktoria Köln edge thrilling friendly with five-goal haul
FC Viktoria Köln played host to VVV-Venlo on a warm summer evening in what proved to be an open and entertaining friendly contest. The home crowd settled in for what would become a goal-filled affair, with both teams clearly using the fixture to build match fitness ahead of the new season. From the opening exchanges, it was clear this would be a game where defensive solidity took a backseat to attacking ambition.
The goals came thick and fast as the match unfolded in front of an engaged home support. Viktoria struck early to take the lead, but Venlo responded immediately to level the contest and keep themselves very much in the game. The visitors refused to be intimidated and their willingness to push forward kept the home defence under pressure throughout. By the interval, the scoreline reflected the open nature of proceedings, with multiple strikes from each side already registered.
The second half maintained the entertaining pattern established in the first 45 minutes. Viktoria began to exert greater control as the game wore on, and their superior fitness started to show as Venlo's intensity waned. The home side's attacking play eventually paid dividends as they took a commanding lead going into the final stretches. Venlo continued to threaten, adding more goals to their tally, but it proved too little too late as Viktoria ran out 5-3 winners.
The result will provide confidence for Viktoria heading into their competitive campaign, particularly their ability to both create and finish chances. Venlo, meanwhile, showed enough attacking promise to suggest their season could be promising despite the defeat. For both clubs, this fixture served its purpose as a useful pre-season workout before the stakes become considerably higher in the weeks ahead.
