Steffen Strike Sends Lugano Through to Next Round
FC Lugano dominated possession from the opening whistle in what was a largely one-sided affair under the Swiss summer sun. The home crowd sensed opportunity early, with Dukagjini content to sit deep and hit on the break from Kosovo. Lugano's intent was clear, but they needed that crucial breakthrough to break down their stubborn visitors.
The hosts found their goal in the 31st minute when R. Steffen latched onto a loose ball and finished clinically past the Dukagjini keeper. It was no more than Lugano deserved at that point, though Dukagjini showed some resilience in response. M. Zanotti picked up a yellow card for Lugano in the 21st minute, while E. Basriu saw yellow for the visitors in the 49th minute as both sides began to show their frustration.
Dukagjini offered little going forward throughout the 90 minutes, and Lugano controlled the tempo effectively after taking the lead. The away side had chances to trouble the home defence on the counter but lacked the finishing touch when it mattered. Lugano's midfield controlled the game intelligently, preventing any real momentum shifts despite Dukagjini's organized defensive approach.
The 1-0 victory sends Lugano through to the next qualifying round of the Conference League, where they will face a fresh test. It was a professional performance rather than a scintillating one, but the Swiss side did exactly what was required against determined opposition. They will head into the next stage with confidence, having secured their passage through another hurdle in their European campaign.
