Al-Riyadh and Al-Gharafa Share Spoils in Friendly Stalemate
Al-Riyadh hosted Al-Gharafa on 27 July in a Club Friendly that offered little quarter despite its pre-season billing. The home side came out aggressive from the opening whistle, and their early pressure paid off when V. Lekhal broke the deadlock in the 13th minute. Al-Gharafa had to regroup after falling behind, but the visitors showed character and composure as the first half wore on.
The second half proved far more eventful. Al-Gharafa equalised in the 55th minute when an unnamed player found the back of the net, setting up a tense finale. Just six minutes later, the visitors took the lead from the penalty spot after another unmarked scorer converted from 12 yards. It looked as though Al-Gharafa might claim an away win, but Al-Riyadh refused to fold. The home side won a penalty of their own in the 71st minute, and an unnamed player stepped up to restore parity and secure Al-Riyadh 2-2 Al-Gharafa.
Both teams had chances to win it in the remaining minutes, but neither could find a breakthrough. The intensity rarely dropped despite the friendly status, with both sides clearly using the match as serious preparation for the campaign ahead. Al-Riyadh pressed forward in search of a winner, while Al-Gharafa defended resolutely to protect their point.
The draw leaves both sides with work to do before competitive fixtures begin. For Al-Riyadh, the inability to convert their early dominance into three points will concern their coaching staff. Al-Gharafa, meanwhile, showed resilience on the road but will feel they could have capitalised on their second-half momentum. Both teams will view this encounter as a useful workout rather than a dress rehearsal for what lies ahead.
