Le Sporting résiste à la remontée de Vitória lors du premier match à cinq buts

Sporting CP made a blistering start to their Liga Portugal Betclic campaign, racing into a 3-0 lead by the 41st minute. F. Gonçalves struck first on nine minutes, then F. Ioannidis added a second just after the quarter-hour. S. Altimira completed the early dominance shortly before half-time, though he was cautioned for his troubles moments later as referee discipline began to tighten.

Vitória SC emerged from the break with purpose. Two quick goals in the 66th and 68th minutes, courtesy of Samu and A. Ndoye, set up a tense finale and turned what had looked a one-sided affair into a genuine contest. The visitors pressed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, forcing Sporting to defend resolutely as the match stretched into six minutes of stoppage time.

The closing stages descended into a scrappy affair as both sides accumulated cautions. Quaresma, G. Catamo, and G. Inácio all received yellows for Sporting, while M. Nogueira and G. Silva picked up bookings for Vitória. Neither side could find a breakthrough, however, and Sporting held firm to preserve their three-goal cushion despite the relentless late pressure.

The home victory sets Sporting up well for the campaign ahead, though questions will linger about their defending in the second half. Vitória can take encouragement from their comeback display, but the away defeat serves as a reminder of how quickly a match can slip away. Sporting's clinical finishing in the opening 45 minutes ultimately proved the difference.
