Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United share spoils in late-goal thriller

Real Salt Lake came into this fixture looking to build momentum at home, but found themselves unable to break down a stubborn Minnesota United defence for much of the afternoon. The visitors settled quickly and established themselves as a competitive force, with both teams playing controlled football in the opening stages. Early caution from referee resulted in yellow cards for Zack Booth of the hosts in the 12th minute and Minnesota's J. Diaz shortly after, setting a slightly fractious tone.

The breakthrough came late in the game when Salt Lake finally made their dominance count. Solans fired the hosts ahead in the 82nd minute, sending the crowd into celebration and seemingly putting Real Salt Lake on course for victory. It proved premature. Minnesota United refused to accept defeat and mounted an instant response, levelling the match just seven minutes later when Pereyra found the back of the net in the 89th minute. With four minutes of stoppage time ahead, the away side had forced Real Salt Lake to settle for a draw.

Rodrigues received a yellow card for the hosts in the 56th minute as the match grew more competitive in the middle stages, though chances remained scarce for both sides until that explosive final stretch. Spierings joined the booking list for Minnesota in the 90th minute as tensions ran high. The frenetic closing minutes left little room for either team to find a winner, and the whistle came with neither side able to force a decisive break.

A point apiece reflects how evenly matched these two teams proved to be, though Real Salt Lake will rue the late equaliser that denied them three points at home. Minnesota United, meanwhile, showed character and resilience to avoid defeat on the road. Both sides remain in the hunt as the season presses on, though for the hosts in particular, dropped points in matches like this could yet prove costly.
