Empoli avanza ante Pisa en penaltis en un emocionante partido de la Coppa Italia

Pisa and Empoli served up a tightly contested Coppa Italia encounter that refused to be settled inside 90 minutes. The two sides matched each other throughout a competitive opening round tie, with neither able to gain a decisive grip on proceedings.

Tommaso Marras handed Pisa the advantage just before the interval, firing his team into a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. Empoli refused to wilt, however, and Enrico Saporiti restored parity with a well-taken goal in the 61st minute to level the match at 1-1. The away side's resilience was tested by Pisa's attacking intent, yet Empoli's defence held firm despite the home team's sustained pressure.

Disciplined defending from Empoli kept the contest alive, though referee cards for E. Biondini, G. Yepes, and G. Indragoli reflected the intensity on display. The match remained level through 90 minutes and into extra time, neither side able to find the breakthrough that would have settled the tie outright.

With the score remaining at 1-1 after extra time, the outcome fell to a penalty shootout. Empoli held their nerve from the spot to win 5-4 on penalties, securing their passage to the round of 32 and ending Pisa's Coppa Italia campaign. The away side's composure in the shootout proved the difference in a match that demanded everything from both camps.
