Camello and Díaz Strike as Rayo and Alavés Share Spoils
Rayo Vallecano and Deportivo Alavés served up a competitive but ultimately goalless first half, with neither side able to break through a resolute defensive display. The home team controlled spells of possession without converting their pressure into clear-cut chances, while Alavés remained compact and dangerous on the counter. The opening period offered little to separate the teams, setting the stage for a second half that would finally produce the goals both sets of supporters craved.
Santi Camello broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half, giving Rayo Vallecano the lead they had threatened to seize. The goal energised the home crowd and appeared to be steering the match toward a Vallecano victory. That advantage lasted 36 minutes until Manu Díaz equalised for Alavés in the 84th minute, salvaging a point for the visitors when it seemed the home side would claim all three.
The turning point came not with Díaz's leveller but in the minutes immediately after Camello's opener. Rayo should have built on their advantage, yet Alavés refused to wilt. Instead of buckling, the away side regrouped and grew into the contest, gradually shifting the balance of play. By the final quarter, they looked the more dangerous team, and Díaz's finish vindicated their second-half resilience.
Both teams created opportunities throughout, though neither dominated entirely. Rayo pressed for a winner after falling behind, committing more bodies forward in search of a second goal. Alavés, meanwhile, showed the discipline that has become their trademark, absorbing pressure and striking when openings appeared. The match ebbed and flowed in typical La Liga fashion, with neither side able to impose sustained control.
Discipline shaped the closing stages. Nicolás Tenaglia, Camello, and Nicolás Valentini all received cautions, and by the final whistle both sides were content to accept the point. Rayo Vallecano 1-1 Deportivo Alavés leaves both teams with work to do as the season unfolds. Neither will feel particularly satisfied, but neither should feel aggrieved at the outcome of an evenly matched La Liga encounter.
