The away side managed little more than occasional forays forward, lacking the cutting edge needed to trouble a confident Portland defence led by their increasingly dominant players as the match progressed.

The comprehensive win keeps Portland's season on track and provides genuine momentum heading into their next fixture. San Diego, by contrast, will need to regroup and rediscover their shape after a second-half collapse. Lassiter's yellow card aside, the Timbers avoided further disciplinary trouble, with only Kelsy receiving a caution late on for Portland and Verhoeven for San Diego as the match wound down over the added six minutes of stoppage time.
