Gouiri Double Sinks Strasbourg as Marseille Dominate
Olympique de Marseille delivered a commanding performance on the opening day of the Ligue 1 season, dismantling RC Strasbourg with a ruthless display that left the away side in tatters by the final whistle. The home side controlled proceedings throughout and punished their guests for every defensive slip, eventually winning 4-0 in a one-sided encounter.
The first half remained goalless, but Marseille broke the deadlock within seconds of the restart. Adrien Gouiri struck on 46 minutes to give the hosts the lead they had been threatening. Strasbourg's task grew immeasurably harder on 59 minutes when S. E. Mourabet was sent off, leaving the visitors to defend with ten men against an increasingly dominant home team. Gouiri doubled his tally from the penalty spot on 68 minutes, and two further goals followed to complete a rout.
Strasbourg's red card proved the turning point. Down to ten men and already behind, the away team had no answer to Marseille's intensity. The dismissal fundamentally altered the match's complexion, allowing Marseille to shift from controlled dominance into outright superiority. What might have been a close contest became a procession, with Strasbourg's depleted backline unable to withstand wave after wave of attacks.
Marseille pressed their advantage relentlessly once numerical superiority arrived. Their front four ran freely, finding space in dangerous areas and capitalizing on the extra man with clinical finishing. Strasbourg offered little in attack, forced into a defensive shell by circumstances beyond their control. The visitors showed no threat to the Marseille goal and spent the closing stages simply trying to minimize damage.
Discipline issues compounded Strasbourg's troubles. Yellow cards to S. Amo-Ameyaw on 48 minutes and S. Mara on 61 minutes reflected the growing frustration and desperation spreading through the away ranks. Marseille's N. Aguerd collected a late caution as his side managed the closing stages without urgency, content to see out the contest.
The scale of this victory sends a powerful message from Marseille as they begin their campaign. Strasbourg, meanwhile, face a difficult recovery after a performance undermined by the red card but also marked by defensive fragility even before that moment. These early-season hammerings often matter when the final standings arrive in May.
